Turkey bacon producer goes for Guinness world record

If Godshall's Quality Meats succeeds in producing a piece of turkey bacon that is at least 16.6 feet long, it will become the holder of a Guinness world record.

Like many members of Generation X, I bought at least one copy of the Guinness Book of World Records from a Scholastic book order.

And it was fun to go through those books, and with my friends on the school bus comparing what we thought were the most remarkable records included. And not to be boastful, but I was even part of the record-setting world’s largest marching band my freshman year in high school, and it was cool to see that little tidbit in print.

But somehow, I don’t ever remember reading about the world’s largest piece of turkey bacon.

That’s just as well. Because that record is poised to be broken in just a few days.

According to a report from Central Penn Business Journal, Godshall’s Quality Meats is gunning for that record, which it intends to break on June 21 at its plant in North Lebanon Township, Pennsylvania. And in order to write its name in the record book, Godshall’s will need to come up with a slice of turkey bacon that is a minimum of 16.6 feet long.

That’s a lot of bacon, but at least the company appears to have the equipment to do so, with a giant smokehouse oven that measures 25 feet long and 10 feet wide.

The news report also stated that the potential record-setting piece of bacon will cook for more than six hours and an official Guinness surveyor and judge will be on hand to authenticate whether the record will actually be set.

And what will they do with that gigantic slice of bacon? Eat it, of course. Once the bacon is certified as a record-breaker, it will be served during a BLT luncheon.

This sounds like it will be a fun day for the folks at Godshall’s, and I wish them luck in achieving this goal.
